MANHASSET, N.Y. ? Taiwan-based IC packaging and testing services supplier Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc. posted sales of $453.3 million with net income of $47.2 million. By comparison, ASE posted sales of $594.9 million with a net loss of $285.9 million in the previous quarter, and sales of $653.9 million and net income of $58.2 million in the year-ago quarter.

ASE saw earnings rebound after a May 1 fire at its Chungli plant that impacted previous quarter results. IC packaging, testing and module assembly represent approximately comprised 68, 20, and 11 percent, respectively, of ASE¡¯s total revenue in the third quarter.

"We are very pleased with our operating results in the third quarter", said Jason Chang, chairman of ASE, in a statement. "After the fire accident at our facilities in Chungli in May 2005, the management team has taken a series of initiatives aimed at not only recovering the loss of business momentum caused by the accident, but also improving our business efficiency.¡±

Chang added that the ramp-up of its plastic ball grid array substrate capacity has brought production back-up to pre-fire levels.

Third-quarter capital expenditures were $61 million, of which $32 million were for IC packaging, $3 million for module assembly, and $26 million for testing.
